Travel: Helsinki

Helsinki is a city that oozes modernity and tradition at once. A crossroads between the West and the East, with a fascinatingly rich history. Surrounded by the gulf of Finland, the beauty of nature is never far off. The sea, the archipelago and forests all perfectly contrast with the city’s own distinct urbanism, which is refined and functional. Its easy going rhythm and compact size make it the perfect destination for a relaxed city trip.

One of Helsinki’s main attractions is its architecture of all kinds. You’ll find yourself admiring the many neo-classical buildings in the Eteläranta area, the avant-garde architecture of the Kamppi neighborhood, or the glass skyscrapers in the Pasila business area – all very different and all contributing to the city’s dynamic. The influence the Art Nouveau style is particularly tangible in the Alppiharju area where it blends with more recent structures, such as the iconic central station, designed by Eliel Saarinen.

As said, the presence of nature plays a big role in Helsinki’s charm. With the Nordic capital consisting of hundreds of small islands, it’s a perfectly picturesque setting for long walks, bike rides, boat trips or even a dip in the sea. Small but majestic getaways like Majamaja only enhance that idea, with its tiny houses right by the water, all including saunas (of course, it’s Finland!) and offering incredible views.

Helsinki is also a hotspot for culture and design, as it’s full of museums, art galleries and events. The Kiasma Museum Of Contemporary Art is definitely not to be missed, while the Ateneum Museum offers an impressive range of classic Finnish art. Another must-go is the Design District, with its boutiques run by local creatives. It’s the ideal spot to witness the unbridled creativitity of the Finnish capital.
