A cropped jacket or blazer keeps the line of the dress and does not cover the hem. A longline trench coat extends the silhouette and makes the look feel more dressed. For a midi or maxi dress, match the coat length roughly to the dress, or keep it slightly shorter to avoid breaking the proportion.

A bomber is a specific type of blouson: short, with ribbing at the neck, cuffs and hem, and wide armholes. Blouson is the broader term for any short outerwear style without a structured collar. A trench coat, parka or blazer would not be described as a blouson.

Over a knit, yes: the quilted or padded construction provides a useful extra layer without the bulk of a coat. On its own, a gilet is built for mild days or indoor spaces. For colder autumn days, layer it over a thick jumper or under a coat for full coverage.
