Angora

Care guide

Angora

Soft, lightweight, and luxuriously warm — angora is a natural fiber spun from the coat of the Angora rabbit. Known for its delicate feel and incredible softness, it brings a touch of refinement to any knit. But with great softness comes great responsibility: angora needs a little extra care to stay beautiful season after season.

How to care for your angora item?

First of all, your angora item doesn’t need to be washed every time you’ve worn it. Only clean or wash it when it gets soiled.

  • Do not wear the same garment too frequently, allow it to rest a few days after a day’s wearing.
  • Additionally, you can air it out or quickly steam it to keep it smelling fresh between uses.
  • Do not wear angora next to rougher clothing, sharp or metal objects, belts, bracelets and so on.
  • Only use hand wash or dry-cleaning. No machine washing preferably.

When you need to wash your angora item, please do as follows:

1. Hand wash

A cold-water hand wash is advised for delicate knits such as angora.

  • Use a mild detergent, without bleach, dyes or enzymes
  • Do not agitate or wring the item, be gentle
  • Avoid lifting the item out of the washing bowl as the weight of the water can stretch and distort the weave

Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  • Fill the sink or bathtub with lukewarm water.
  • Add a tablespoon of clear natural soap or a mild detergent (like baby shampoo).
  • Swirl the water around to mix the soap into the water & make it a little sudsy.
  • Place the angora item into the water. Push down on it & gently squeeze, use the same action as if you were kneading dough. Continue to do this all over the entire item. Do not twist or pull.
  • Let the water out of the sink or bathtub and refill with clean water, press down & gently squeeze the item.
  • Let the water out of the sink or tub.
  • Press down on the item to remove some of the excess water. Do not twist or wring.
  • Place the angora item between two clean and dry towels. Gently roll and press to get rid of the last bits of excess water.

2. Dry-cleaning

Dry-cleaning is generally recommended for angora items. Please make sure you check the care label for specific instructions. When in doubt, ask your dry-cleaner for advice.

How to dry an angora item?

For a delicate fabric like angora, drying it correctly is crucial:

  • Never tumble-dry your angora item
  • Air dry flat on a grill, so the angora item can breathe.

How to iron your angora item?

  • Iron the item inside out, using a low heat setting on your iron
  • It is advised to use a pressing cloth (like a thin towel) between the iron and the angora to prevent scorching
  • Lightly steam the garment while ironing, or use a spray bottle to dampen the fabric slightly before ironing
  • Avoid dragging the iron back and forth, lift and place gently
  • After ironing, lay the item flat on a clean, dry surface to cool and reshape

How to store your angora item?

  • Make sure your angora item is completely dry before storing
  • Fold to prevent stretching
  • Store in a cool, dryand dark place, away from direct heat and sunlight
  • Additionally, you can use a breathable knit storage bag
  • Avoid hanging angora garments because this may cause them to stretch

How to deal with stains on your angora item?

To effectively treat stains on angora items, act quickly but gently. Dab the stain with a cloth soaked in a diluted, wool-friendly and mild detergent (like baby shampoo) mixed with cold water. Avoid harsh chemicals and rubbing or twistingasthis can damage the fibers.

For specific stain types, pre-treating with a solution of vinegar and water, talc or flour, or even hydrogen peroxide may be helpful.

How to remove pilling from an angora item?

With wear, you’re likely to see the appearance of small pills or bobbles. These usually occur through friction, so you’ll find them under the arms, at the lower back and other areas that are exposed to friction. We advise you to de-pill angora (and other woolen items) with a simple knitwear comb or a fabric shaver. Avoid using razors or other sharp objects, as these can damage the delicate fibers.

How to prevent moths from plaguing your angora item?

Store your angora, wool, and other delicate natural fibers properly to keep them safe from dust, mold, direct light, and moths.

A few tips:

  • Before storing an angora item, make sure it’s 100% clean and dry. Food residues and skin cells attract moths.
  • If your angora item needs dry cleaning, do it before storing as moths dislike dry cleaning fluid.
  • Fold the item neatly, and if possible, use a zip-up storage bag.
  • Use scented essential oils or cedar wood to repel moths and protect your clothes, moths dislike the smell.
  • If you think you have clothes moths, make sure you vacuum and treat any storage area before you put clothes away.
