Leather

Care guide

Leather

Leather is a natural material known for its durability, timeless look, and ability to age beautifully. Sourced from animal hide, it breathes, adapts, and develops character over time. Whether it’s a leather jacketor a favorite bag, leather items are investments—and with the right care they can last a lifetime.

How to best care for leather.

Proper care starts with prevention. Leather doesn’t need constant attention, but a little love goes a long way.

 • Store smartly: Keep leather out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent drying or fading.
 • Let it breathe: Avoid plastic bags; instead, store items in cloth covers to allow airflow.
 • Rotate use: Giving your leather goods a break extends their lifespan and keeps them from wearing down unevenly.
 • Dust off: To properly clean, treat, and moisturize your leather items, it’s important to remove any dust, crumbs, or other residues. Use a soft cotton cloth for this. To dust the handles or the curved parts of your bag, you can use a soft brush. This step also includes dusting the inside of your bag.
 • Moisturize: Use a cleansing and moisturizing milk (or quality leather conditioner) to nourish the leather from time to time, in order to keep it supple and prevent it from drying out.
 • Waterproof: Use a leather waterproofing spray sparingly to protect your bag from rain and moisture. Spray evenly from at least 30 cm away to create a protective layer. The best protection during a downpour? Keep it under your jacket.

How to wash leather items.

Leather and water don’t mix well — so cleaning needs to be gentle and minimal.

 • Always test first: Whatever you do, always try any product on a hidden area before applying more broadly.
 • Use a cloth: For surface dirt, wipe down gently with a soft cloth.
 • Avoid soaking: Never submerge leather in water. Excess moisture can warp the material.
 • Cleansing milk: If needed, use cleansing milk or leather-safe mild detergent in small amounts.

How to dry leather.

Wet leather can be tricky, but with care, it’s salvageable.

 • Pat, don’t rub: Use a clean towel to gently blot excess moisture.
 • Let it air dry: Place the item in a well-ventilated room at room temperature. Hang it to avoid contact with any surface to prevent stains. Never use a hair dryer, radiator, or direct sun.
 • Shape it: Stuff shoes or bags with paper to help maintain form while drying.
 • Condition after drying: Once dry, restore lost moisture with a conditioner. Spread evenly, in one session. Afterwards, waterproof the item again.

How to deal with stains on leather.

Act fast and always treat with care.

 • Grease or oil stains: Sprinkle Terre de Sommières on the spot. Let it sit overnight and gently brush off.
 • Water stains: Absorb any water on the surface with a soft, dry cloth, then hang the item without letting it touch any surfaces to avoid water marks.
 • Ink or dye: These are tough but avoid home remedies like alcohol. Best to consult a leather specialist.
 • Always blot, never rub: Rubbing can damage the grain and set the stain deeper.

Further tips and tricks.

Leather is resilient, but a few habits make all the difference.

 • Keep it dry: Avoid wearing leather in heavy rain or snow.
 • Use cedar: Cedar shoe trees or sachets help absorb moisture and odors.
 • Moisturize regularly: For leather shoes or bags, use a soft cloth and leather-specific moisturizing milk to keep their shine and protect against cracking.
 • Professional help: For deep cleaning or serious damage, a leather care specialist is your best friend.
