cape town — portrait #1

run bb run

run bb run The Cape Town edition

While we were swallowed up by South Africa’s stunning landscapes creating our Places Unknown editorial, we met up with the Cape Town based Must Love Hills running crew. The idea was to capture their energy and spirit during one of their runs against winding roads, steep climbs, and breathtaking light — offering a unique glimpse into what running feels like in this vibrant country.

A big part of what we do here at Bellerose is about connecting with the people and the world around us. After hosting several group runs in Belgium – linking up with a community of runners who enjoy exploring together – we wanted to take that experience to South Africa. It was an exciting challenge, blending the thrill of the run with the beauty of a completely new environment. The rugged terrain and scenic vistas served as a majestic backdrop, and the runners all exuded the free-spirited energy that we thrive on.

The Must Love Hills crew – known for their inclusivity, passion and diversity – live by the motto that running is about embracing both the challenge and the joy of movement. Whether running through urban landscapes or conquering the steep South African hills, they celebrate the beauty of the world around them and the friendships they build along the way. Their style is a reflection of that spirit. Practical yet stylish, adventurous yet grounded. A perfect fit for Bellerose.

No one’s more qualified to tell you what the Must Love Hills run crew is about than the people in it, so we had quick chat with Lee, Bukiwe and Caitlin – 3 of the runners that participated – to find out who they are and what running means to them.

Who are you, and what’s one thing we need to know about you?

Lee

A humble born and bred Cape Tonian male who loves being out running, be it trails or road. Most importantly, someone who loves to push themselves past all limits.

Bukiwe

I’m Bukiwe Nana Thwala, and one thing you should know about me is that I thrive on challenges; forever breaking boundaries.

Caitlin

I’m a 24-year-old medical graduate and an endurance sports enthusiast. One thing you need to know about me? I love a challenge — whether it’s tackling long runs, racing triathlons, or navigating the steepest hills, I’m always up for the grind!

“The unbeatable views make every stride worth it “

When and why did you start running?

Lee

I got into running about 4 years ago after the realisation of not being able to continue playing rugby hit me. The steps into running were mainly encompassed by wanting to stay fit, as I’m sure most people starting off would attest to. The change to devoting more time and expanding the interest into the sport came from seeing close friends of mine taking on longer distance runs and races, and the urge to be a part of that. After that first taste of a road marathon in 2021, the hunger for more kept growing!

Bukiwe

I started running in 2023, right after moving to Cape Town. At the time, I didn’t know anyone and was looking for a way to connect with people, explore the place, stay fit, and have fun while doing it. Little did I know, I would find the best community I never knew I needed! Since then, I’ve kept running and I’ve never looked back.

Caitlin

I started running a few years ago as a way to stay active, but it quickly turned into something much bigger. Running became my space to clear my mind, push my limits, and explore the world on foot. Now, it’s an essential part of my life — whether I’m training for a marathon or just enjoying the rhythm of my own footsteps.

It was all about capturing the energy and spirit

What can you tell us about the specific run you did for Bellerose?

Lee

I’ve never been involved in something like this before, which made the experience all that much more enlightening! I loved the blend it created between running and aesthetic, with the underlying confidence building behind the message and atmosphere. I almost forgot we were running!

Bukiwe

Well, we started with some basic warm-up shots, followed by strides under the bridge, and concluded it by running up Table Mountain at sunset. But honestly, it didn’t feel like a shoot at all; it felt like just another run, with people watching and admiring what we do as runners. It was a beautiful reminder of why I love running; the challenge of running the hills, the reward, and the unbeatable views of Table Mountain that make every stride worth it.

Caitlin

It was definitely one for the books! It was all about capturing the energy and spirit of running in the beautiful landscapes of Cape Town, the vibe was incredible.

Pushing past all limits
