Autumn outfits for women

10 min

Five looks that work all season

Key details at a glance

  • Layer by texture rather than by bulk: a fine knit under a coat keeps its shape better than one thick sweater alone
  • Choose your outerwear according to the weather ahead: trench for dry days, parka for wind and rain, checked coat for the in-between
  • Build an autumn capsule wardrobe around four or five pieces that layer into one another: sweater, cardigan, wide-leg trousers, dark-wash denim
  • Knitwear does the transitional work: worn alone in early autumn, then layered under a coat as the temperature drops

There is a particular week, somewhere between the last warm afternoon and the first grey morning, when the wardrobe stops making sense. The sandals go back in their box. A summer dress hangs on, but only under a sweater, sleeves pushed to the elbow.

This is where autumn dressing begins: with a slow layering of one texture over another, until the whole silhouette has changed its weight.

In this Bellerose guide, you will find five autumn outfits for women to build from, the pieces worth investing in for a proper capsule wardrobe, and how to choose between a trench coat, a parka or a checked coat depending on the week ahead.

Five autumn outfit ideas for women

Five combinations, each built around one strong piece, take you from the school run to a Friday evening without a second thought.

1.

Hooded parka, corduroy trousers and sneakers

A hooded parka worn open over a plain jumper, corduroy trousers in a warm rust or olive, and a pair of trainers in white leather. The parka does the heavy lifting against the wind, while the corduroy brings a soft, ribbed texture. This is the outfit for a day spent moving between places: the school gates, the market, a coffee that turns into two.

2.

Chunky knit, midi skirt

An oversized chunky knit tucked loosely into a midi skirt. The knit brings volume up top, the skirt keeps the silhouette long, and the boots ground the whole look in something a little tougher. Add a fine leather belt to mark the waist if the sweater is on the longer side.

3.

Checked coat, wide-leg trousers and ballet flats

A  checked coat thrown over the shoulders, wide-leg trousers in charcoal or camel, and ballet flats worn with a fine sock for the cooler mornings. The checked wool gives the outfit its personality; everything underneath stays deliberately quiet, so the coat can do the talking. This is autumn dressing at its most polished, suited to a lunch that matters or a first meeting.

4.

Cashmere sweater and tailored trousers

For autumn work outfits, little beats a cashmere jumper in a soft neutral, tucked into tailored trousers with a sharp front crease. Loafers finish the silhouette without adding weight to it. The cashmere brings warmth without bulk under a blazer, which means the outfit still works once the coat comes off at the desk.

5.

Trench coat, straight-leg jeans and loafers

A classic  trench coat, belted at the waist, over straight-leg jeans in a dark wash, with loafers underneath. It is the outfit that asks the least and gives the most: fast to put together, at ease in the rain, sharp enough for the evening if you swap the loafers for something with a heel.

Building an autumn capsule wardrobe

At Bellerose, we think of autumn dressing less as a seasonal reset than as an accumulation. A cashmere jumper goes on top of what you were already wearing. A coat or jacket goes over the sweater. Wool replaces cotton, denim turns a shade darker, and suede and leather start doing the work that canvas did all summer.

An autumn capsule wardrobe is less about owning more and more about choosing pieces that keep talking to each other. Start with outerwear, then work inward, layer by layer.

  • One outerwear piece for wet or windy days, a parka or a trench coat that earns its place through the whole season
  • One structured coat, checked or plain, for the days that call for something sharper
  • Two or three sweaters in different weights, a fine one for layering, a chunky one to wear alone
  • A cardigan, worn open over a t-shirt on milder days or closed like a jacket when the temperature drops
  • Wide-leg or straight-leg jeans in a dark wash, which carry the transitional weeks without asking for much thought
  • Tailored trousers for the days that need a little more structure
  • One midi skirt, worn with tights and boots once the cold sets in
  • A small rotation of shoes: sneakers (New Balance, adidas, Autry), loafers (G.H. Bass, Paraboot) or ballet flats for polish, ankle boots or Chelsea boots (Blundstone, UGG) for the wettest days

Four or five of these, chosen well, cover most of what an autumn wardrobe actually needs.

Autumn outerwear: trench, parka or checked coat?

The right outerwear is really a question about your week, not your wardrobe. Here is how the three main options compare.

  • Trench coat: best for dry, breezy days. A belted, structured silhouette, worn over straight-leg jeans and loafers.
  • Hooded parka: best for wind and rain. A relaxed, roomy silhouette, worn over corduroy trousers and sneakers by New Balance or Veja.
  • Checked coat: best for cold, still air. A sharp, tailored silhouette, worn over wide-leg trousers and ballet flats by Miista.

Most autumn wardrobes settle around two of the three, chosen to cover opposite kinds of weather rather than opposite kinds of occasion.

Layering your knitwear: sweaters, cardigans and knitted vests

Knitwear carries the whole transitional stretch of the season, worn alone in September, then layered under a coat as the weeks turn colder.

A fine sweater in cashmere or merino wool sits comfortably under a blazer without adding bulk, while a chunky knit works alone with jeans on the mildest days, then slides under a parka once the wind picks up.

A cardigan flexes both ways too: buttoned to the top, it reads as a light jacket; left open over a t-shirt, it settles into something more relaxed. A knitted vest, layered over a shirt or under a coat, adds warmth through the torso without covering the arms, a useful trick on the days that sit right between two temperatures.

Angora and cashmere both need a gentle hand: a cold wash, dried flat rather than hung, and folded rather than on a hanger, so the knit keeps its shape through the whole season. Our women's knitwear collection runs from featherweight layering pieces to the chunkier knits built to be worn on their own.

An autumn wardrobe built to last the whole season

An autumn outfit rarely comes down to one clever piece. It is the trench that goes over the sweater, the sweater that goes over the shirt, each layer doing its own quiet job. Once the capsule wardrobe is in place, an outfit takes minutes to build, whatever the morning throws at the window.

At Bellerose, that is the outfit we design for: pieces that layer with intention, in materials chosen to be worn again next autumn, and the one after. For the wool and knitwear that carry you through the season, our  care guides explain how to keep every fibre at its best.

Your questions on autumn outfits for women

When does autumn dressing actually start?

Meteorological autumn opens on the 1st of September, but transitional pieces, a light jumper, a trench coat left unbelted, earn their place from mid-August onwards, well before the weather turns properly cold.

What shoes work best with an autumn dress?

Ankle boots and loafers, worn with opaque tights, carry a dress through most of the season. Ballet flats still work through a mild September, before the ground gets too wet for anything without a proper sole.

How do I care for an angora or cashmere sweater?

A cold hand-wash or a wool cycle on the machine, dried flat rather than on a hanger, and stored folded rather than hung, so the knit keeps its shape from one autumn to the next.

What counts as an autumn capsule wardrobe?

A small set of pieces that layer into one another: one coat for wet days, one for dry days, two or three jumpers of different weights, dark-wash denim, tailored trousers, and a short rotation of shoes that covers casual, work and evening.

Should I choose a trench coat or a parka for autumn?

A trench coat suits dry, breezy days and a more structured silhouette. A parka is the better choice once the wind and rain set in, and it layers more comfortably over a chunky jumper. Many autumn wardrobes keep both, one for each kind of week.
