Wool, cotton and technical fabrics

Fabric decides how warm a coat feels, how it falls and how it should be cared for. The collection brings together several families:

• Wool and wool-blend: pure wool or a wool and polyester blend, for a dense cloth that holds its shape and insulates without weighing you down. Each wool coat for women comes in houndstooth, pinstripe or check.
• Cotton canvas and twill: lighter, they give trench-style coats their structure and layer as easily over fine knitwear as over a shirt.
• Ripstop and technical fabrics: in polyamide or a cotton and polyamide blend, they stand up to wind and rain and often come with a hood.
• Linings: faux fur, soft fleece, brushed check cotton or viscose add warmth and help the coat slip on easily over a jumper.
• Quilted: on some reversible styles, a quilted side adds light insulation.

Coat lengths

Length changes the silhouette, how the coat layers and how it fits into everyday life.

Cropped coat

Stopping at the hip, a cropped coat frees up the legs and pairs well with wide-leg trousers or a midi skirt. It layers easily and is the most practical choice for cycling.

Mid-length coat

Falling between mid-thigh and knee, this is the most versatile length: it covers a blazer without restricting movement and works just as well with trousers as with a dress.

Long coat

Reaching the calf, a long coat for women lengthens the silhouette and offers more coverage. Wear it open over straight-leg trousers or closed over a dress, with its hem falling well below whatever you wear underneath.

Cuts, collars and fastenings

Most styles are cut oversized, with dropped shoulders, generous volume and room for a chunky knit. Take your usual size for that relaxed shape, or size down for a neater fit. A few styles offer a straighter cut, some with a drawcord waist.

When it comes to collars, wide notched lapels define the tailored wool coats, while a funnel neck keeps out the wind and a classic trench collar frames the face. Fastenings follow suit: double-breasted buttoning for the classic coats, a zip with a press-stud placket on the technical styles, and an offset or concealed button placket for a cleaner line.

Types of women's coat

• Double-breasted wool coat: wide lapels and a double row of buttons, in houndstooth or pinstripe, with a long, straight silhouette.
• Cape coat: in check wool, with no armholes, a funnel neck and a full-length zip.

Caring for a wool coat

A wool coat rarely needs cleaning: regular brushing, in the direction of the fibres, lifts dust and revives the cloth. Between wears, let it air on a wide hanger that supports the shoulders. The wool coats in this collection are not suitable for machine or hand washing, so for stains, always follow the care label, which usually recommends gentle dry cleaning.

Pilling can appear where the fabric rubs, under the arms or where a bag sits: a wool comb or fabric shaver removes it without damaging the fibres. Once clean and dry, store the coat on a hanger in a breathable garment bag, away from light and damp, which also helps keep moths at bay. Looked after properly, it will last for many years.
