Denim

Care guide

Denim

Your jeans deserve a little love. With the right care, your favorite denim pieces only get better with time—more character, more comfort, more you. Here’s how to keep them looking (and feeling) their best.

How to take care of your denim

Denim is a sturdy cotton twill fabric, durable by nature. Next to that, denim doesn’t love (or need) over-washing. It just gets better with time. However, some extra care can go a long way. A few basic things first:

 • Denim is made to be worn in and worn often.
 • The more you wear it, the better it fits.
 • That fading and softness? That’s denim doing its thing.
 • Wash less, air out more.
 • Always check the care label, as some denim has stretch or special finishes that need extra attention.

How to wash denim items

When it’s time for a proper wash, go gentle. Denim isn’t delicate, but it’s still worth protecting.

 • Turn inside out before washing — this helps preserve the color and prevents streaking.
 • Use cold water to avoid shrinkage and fading.
 • Opt for a mild detergent, preferably one made for dark fabrics.
 • Wash with similar colors — denim can bleed, especially dark or raw styles.
 • Use the delicate or gentle cycle. Hand washing is even better if you’re up for it.

How to dry denim

Please keep your denim away from the dryer. Really.

 • Air dry flat or hang by the waistband.
 • Keep out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.
 • Never wring out your denim, it distorts the shape.

How to iron denim

Ironing isn’t always needed, but if you want a crisp look, here’s how.

 • Iron inside out to avoid shiny marks.
 • Use medium to high heat with steam.
 • For stubborn wrinkles, dampen the area slightly before ironing.

How to store denim

Denim doesn’t need to be overly protected, but how you store it matters.

 • Fold jeans to avoid stretching out the waistband.
 • Avoid hanging from the belt loops — they can stretch and snap.
 • Store in a cool, dry place to prevent mustiness.
 • Keep similar washes together if you’re picky about dye transfer.

How to deal with stains

Stains happen, no need to panic. Act fast and skip harsh treatments.

 • Blot, don’t rub. Use a clean cloth to absorb the stain.
 • Use mild soap and cold water for most stains.
 • For oil or grease, we recommend using Terre de Sommières, a fine clay-based powder that is highly absorbent.
 • No bleach. Ever.

Extra tips & tricks

A few final bits of denim wisdom to keep your pieces in prime shape.

 • Want to refresh between wears? Hang them in the bathroom while you shower. Steam helps!
 • Raw denim? Hold off washing as long as possible to create a unique fade pattern.
 • Avoid overloading your machine — denim needs room to move.
 • Traveling? Roll your jeans instead of folding to save space and prevent creasing.
