Care guide

Sneakers

Sneakers have long outgrown the gym. They’ve become a modern essential that we wear with everything from denim to tailored looks, day in and day out. They’re about comfort, confidence, and a sense of ease that fits effortlessly into your life.

But with constant wear comes the need for care. Keep your favourite pair fresh with a few simple habits.

How to keep your sneakers clean

Everyday wear is part of the charm. That said, a little regular care goes a long way.

  • Gently brush off dirt after each wear using a soft brush or cloth
  • Avoid wearing them in heavy rain or mud
  • Rotate your pairs to give them breathing space

How to wash your sneakers

Machine washing might be tempting, but it's rarely a good idea. Here's how to clean your sneakers gently, by hand, to keep them looking their best.

Bellerose

Step 1: Prep your sneakers

  • Remove the laces and insoles. Wash laces separately in warm, soapy water.
  • Tap the soles together to loosen dirt, then brush off dry mud or dust.
  • If the insoles are smelly, sprinkle with baking soda and let sit for a few hours before brushing off.

Step 2: Mix your cleaning solution

  • Combine a small amount of mild detergent (or dish soap) with lukewarm water in a bowl.
  • Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals — these can damage colour and materials.

Step 3: Clean the uppers

  • Dip your soft brush or cloth into the soapy water and gently scrub the surface.
  • Work in small circles, don’t soak the fabric.
  • For leather parts, use a damp cloth instead of scrubbing directly.

Step 4: Scrub the soles

  • Use the same brush with more pressure to clean the rubber soles.
  • A magic eraser works well for stubborn scuffs or yellowing midsoles.

Step 5: Rinse and dry

  • Wipe everything down with a clean, damp cloth to remove soap residue.
  • Pat dry with a towel, then stuff the shoes with paper (not newspaper — the ink can transfer).
  • Let them air dry at room temperature, away from direct sunlight or heaters.

How to dry and store your sneakers

No shortcuts here: heat is the enemy.

  • Always air-dry at room temperature
  • Avoid direct sunlight and heaters
  • Stuff them with paper towels to help keep shape
  • Store in a cool, dry place (ideally in a shoe bag or box)

How to deal with stains on sneakers

Don’t be panic. Act fast but always stay gentle.

  • For suede: use a suede brush or eraser
  • For canvas or leather: spot-clean with diluted vinegar or baking soda paste
  • For oil-based stains: we recommend using Terre de Sommières, a highly absorbent powder made from fine French clay

Tips and tricks for sneaker longevity

A few habits that make all the difference.

  • Spray with a water- and stain-repellent before first wear
  • Replace laces when they start looking tired, it freshens up the whole shoe
  • Use a shoe tree or crumpled paper to maintain shape
  • Travel with dust bags to avoid scuffs or other damage
