Merino wool

Care guide

Merino wool

Soft, breathable, and naturally technical — merino wool is no ordinary fabric.Spun from the fleece of Merino sheep, it's prized for its ability to regulate temperature, resist odors, and feel luxuriously soft against the skin. Lightweight yet insulating, it’s the kind of material you reach for again and again.

How to care for your merino wool item?

 • Good to know: merino wool is easy to look after. It can usually be washed in a washing machine and doesn’t need any specific treatment. However, please avoid fabric softeners and tumble dryers, as these will damage and/or shrink your merino items.
 • Merino items don’t need to be washed every time they’ve been worn, as they remain odor-free for long periods. It is often sufficient to air them out or quickly steam them. Please avoid wearing your merino items next to rougher clothing, sharp or metal objects, belts, bracelets and so on.

When you need to wash your merino wool item, please do as follows:

Hand wash

 • Fill a basin with cool or lukewarm water
 • Add a mild detergent designed for wool or delicate fibers (we recommend baby shampoo, for example)
 • Gently agitate the water to create suds and then submerge the garment
 • Knead gently, do not wring or pull
 • Empty the basin, and then rinse the garment thoroughly with cool water
 • Gently press out excess water

Machine wash

Please make sure you check the care label to see if machine washing is allowed. With merino, it usually is. Here are some important steps to keep in mind:

Only use a mild, pH-neutral detergent that does not contain bleach or fabric softeners, as these can weaken the fibers

 • Close all zippers and buttons
 • Use a gentle or hand
 • wash cycle, at 30°C
 • Turn the merino wool item inside out before washing it
 • Additionally, consider using a mesh laundry bag to further protect the garment

How to dry a merino wool item?

 • Always air-dry merino wool garments
 • Lay the item flat between two clean and dry towels, press gently to remove excess waterand then reshape it to its original form
 • Lay down flat on a grill, so the merino wool item can dry and breathe
 • Avoid direct sunlight and heat sources like radiators
 • Never use a tumble dryer to dry your merino wool item (or any other woolen item)

How to iron your merino wool?

 • Iron the item inside out, this protects the outer surface.
 • Use a low heat setting.
 • It is advised to use a pressing cloth (or steam iron) to protect the fabric from direct contact with the hot iron.
 • Avoid heavy pressure and prolonged contact with the iron to prevent damage.

How to store your merino wool?

 • Make sure your merino item is completely dry before storing, to avoid attracting moths
 • Preferably store flat, in a dry place, away from direct heat and sunlight
 • Additionally, you can use a breathable knit storage bag
 • If you want to hang your merino wool item, use rounded, rubber hangers or hangers with rubber ends to avoid the item slipping off

How to deal with stains on your merino item?

To remove stains from merino wool, act quickly and gently. Blot, don’t rub

 • Avoid rubbing as this can damage the fibers and spread the stain. Make sure you identify the stain first.
 • Oily or greasy stains: We recommend Terre de Sommières (an ultra-fine powdered clay from France known for its exceptional ability to absorb grease and oil stains from dry surfaces like textiles).
 • General stains: A solution of wool-friendly detergent and water can help.
 • Coffee, tea, fruit: Rinse with cold water and try a diluted detergent solution.

How to remove pilling from a merino item?

With wear, you might see the appearance of small pills or bobbles. These usually occur through friction, so you’ll find them under the arms, at the lower back and other areas that are exposed to friction. We advise you to de-pill merino (and other woolen items) with a simple knitwear comb. Do not use a razor or other sharp objects.

How to prevent moths from plaguing your merino item?

Store your merino wool and other delicate natural fibers properly to keep them safe from dust, mold, direct light, and moths.

 A few tips:

 • Before storing a merino item, make sure it’s 100% clean and dry. Food residues and skin cells attract moths.
 • Fold your merino item neatly, and if possible, use a zip-up storage bag.
 • Use scented essential oils or cedar wood to repel moths and protect your clothes; moths dislike the smell.
 • If you think you have clothes moths, make sure you vacuum and treat any storage area before you put clothes away.
